CNC 4th & 5th Axis Retrofit Compatibility and Selection Reference
Quick answer: Yidai provides external indexed fourth- and fifth-axis retrofit solutions for existing three-axis CNC machines. The usual application is 3+1 or 3+2 positioning, not continuous simultaneous rotary-axis interpolation. Final compatibility depends on the complete CNC model, software version, interfaces, machine-builder PLC logic, wiring, rotary-table load and machining sequence.
Yidai retrofit product architectures
| Solution | Architecture | Servo power | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| YD-1 | Axis-card controller + matched servo drive + matched servo motor | No fixed range; selected for the rotary table, load, torque, speed, inertia, cabinet and project requirements | Flexible external fourth- or fifth-axis positioning packages |
| CSD700 | Axis-card control and servo-drive functions integrated in one device; a matched servo motor is still required | 400 W to 1 kW | Compact indexed fourth- or fifth-axis retrofit packages |
CNC compatibility reference
| CNC system | Manual external-axis operation | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|
| FANUC | The original machine handwheel can be evaluated on compatible configurations. | Complete CNC model, software version, variable or macro access, communication resources, PMC logic and wiring. |
| Mitsubishi | The original machine handwheel can be evaluated on compatible configurations. | Controller series, Ethernet or serial resources, variable addresses, axis-select and multiplier signals, machine PLC and wiring. |
| Brother | An independent electronic handwheel is normally required. | Machine model, communication method, program-call workflow, handwheel installation and in-position feedback. |
| Siemens | An independent electronic handwheel is normally required. | System version, interface resources, program logic, safety interlocks and handwheel wiring. |
No compatibility statement should be treated as universal for every machine carrying the same CNC brand. The complete model and machine-builder implementation must be reviewed.
Application boundary
- Suitable: indexed multi-face machining, bolt circles, side holes, fixed-angle drilling and milling, 3+1 and 3+2 positioning.
- Not a native simultaneous-axis replacement: projects requiring TCP, RTCP or continuous synchronized interpolation between X/Y/Z and the rotary axes should be evaluated as native CNC axis expansion or a dedicated multi-axis machine.
Typical indexed retrofit sequence
- The CNC moves the cutting tool to a confirmed safe position.
- The machine sends the target angle or indexing request to the external-axis system.
- The clamp or brake releases after all required interlocks are satisfied.
- The rotary axis moves and confirms the requested position.
- The clamp or brake engages again.
- The external-axis system returns ready or in-position feedback before cutting resumes.
The final control design should include origin, positive and negative limits, servo alarms, position-complete feedback, clamp status and machining-permission interlocks.

Frequently asked questions
Does YD-1 include a servo motor?
A complete YD-1 package is configured with the axis-card controller, matched servo drive and matched servo motor. Motor power is selected for the project and is not restricted to a fixed range.
Does CSD700 include the motor inside the unit?
No. CSD700 integrates the axis-card control and servo-drive functions. A matched servo motor is still required.
Can every FANUC or Mitsubishi machine retain its original handwheel?
No. Retaining the original handwheel is evaluated only after the exact CNC model, software, interfaces, permissions, PLC logic and machine wiring have been confirmed.
Can an external controller provide continuous four- or five-axis machining?
The standard Yidai external solution is for indexed 3+1 and 3+2 positioning. Continuous simultaneous interpolation requires a different project evaluation.
