How to Choose a 5th Axis Rotary Table for an Existing 3-Axis CNC

A 5th axis rotary table can support indexed multi-angle machining, angled holes and fewer setups. Select the table, workholding, servo, brake and controller as one system rather than comparing table diameter alone.

Define the machining motion

External systems are primarily intended for indexed positioning and multi-side machining. Fully simultaneous 5-axis interpolation requires a separate review of the original CNC, servo architecture and postprocessor.

Check load and travel

Provide workpiece size, fixture weight, mounting direction and required tilt range so table capacity, clearance and clamping rigidity can be checked.

Match the control interface

For FANUC, Mitsubishi, Brother and other controls, confirm whether TCP/IP, RS232 or I/O triggering is practical and whether the original CNC handwheel can be supported.

How does a 5th axis rotary table differ from a 4th axis table?

A 4th axis table normally positions around one rotary axis. A 5th axis tilt-rotary table adds a second angular direction for angled holes, multi-angle surfaces and fewer setups. Indexed 3+2 machining and simultaneous 5-axis motion still require separate capability checks.

Can a 5th axis table be added to a 3-axis machining center?

Many machines can gain indexed multi-angle capability through an external controller, but compatibility depends on the CNC model, available interfaces, electrical conditions and machining goal.

Is an external 5th axis the same as simultaneous 5-axis machining?

No. An external retrofit normally positions the part before machining. Simultaneous motion requires compatible CNC, servo and software architecture.
