Many reliable 3-axis machining centers need indexed rotary positioning for multi-face parts, radial holes, bolt circles or angled features. An external 4th- or 5th-axis retrofit can be a practical alternative to a complete OEM servo-axis expansion, but compatibility cannot be determined from the CNC brand name alone.

What an external rotary-axis retrofit does
An external system adds a CNC rotary table, matched servo motor, controller or integrated controller-drive, brake components and machine-interface hardware to an existing 3-axis CNC. The CNC requests a rotary move, the external system indexes and reclamps, and the CNC continues cutting after receiving position-complete confirmation.
This approach is intended mainly for indexed 3+1 or 3+2 machining. It is not automatically equivalent to native simultaneous X/Y/Z/A or five-axis interpolation.

FANUC CNC compatibility
For compatible FANUC configurations, the original machine handwheel can be retained for rotary-axis setup and manual positioning. The review must still confirm the exact FANUC control, software version, available interface, electrical terminals and alarm/interlock sequence.

Communication methods
Ethernet can provide a direct communication workflow on supported configurations. RS232 can transmit angle or program data where a serial interface is appropriate. Machine I/O or M-code triggering is often suitable for stable indexed cycles. The best method depends on the exact CNC and job rather than the brand alone.

CSD700 and YD-1 control architectures
The CSD700 is Yidai's second-generation integrated controller-drive for indexed external fourth- or fifth-axis retrofits. It combines the axis-card controller and servo drive in one device, supports matched servo power from 400 W to 1 kW, and can reduce separate components, cabinet space and field wiring.
The YD-1 is the first-generation standalone external controller. It uses a separately matched servo drive and servo motor. Both architectures still require the rotary table, brake/clamp circuit, machine interface and safety sequence to be selected for the exact machine and load.
